Soundtrack (:

The first song I chose for my book is Concrete Angel by Martina McBride. This song
represents Alice ( the protagonist). This song talks about how a little girl gets abused by
her mom and it gets so bad that eventually she dies. This relates to my book in so many ways. Alice gets abused by this guy Ray and she never tells anyone. I'm pretty sure some people in the book knew what was going on but didn't wanna do anything about it. That's the same situation in the music video. The girls teacher sees her bruises but completely disregards it like she saw nothing.

The song I chose for my climax is called Butterfly Fly Away by Miley Cyrus. The climax of my book falls at the end. Alice claims she's free from Ray, depending on how you read it, there are different ideas of free. The song talks about how Miley's dad was always there for her and made everything okay but it's time for her to go and be on her own. This relates to the climax because in the song it says "You tucked me in, turned out the light.
Kept me safe and sound at night. Little girls depend on things like that" and that's what Ray thought he was doing for her but it was in fact the complete opposite. At the end it says "We've been waiting for this day All along and knowing just what to do. Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, butterfly fly away." Alice was hoping her day of freedom would come whether it meant death or not. It was her time to be free from him and this song does a great job expressing that.

For my theme I chose how she got taken from her family. I chose the song Rain by Breaking Benjamin. It tells the story about how a girl got taken from her family (or something close to that). The lyrics say " take a photograph, it'll be the last" and that makes me think about when she first got kidnapped. It also says "To lie here under you,
Is all that I could ever do. To lie here under you is all, To lie here under you is all that i could ever do" which makes me think of all the things he did to her and she could do nothing about it.

The next song I chose is the instrumental. It's called Sad Story composed by Tillman Sillescu. It's a beautiful piece. It makes me think "what if this book was made into a movie?" When I imagine what it would be like, I play the music in my head and envision her sitting somewhere having flashbacks of when she was at home with her family. It brings a nostalgic/longing kind of feel to the book.

With the last song, I wanted to show Ray's point of view. I chose the song Closer by Nine Inch Nails. It's a really explicit, disturbing song which is why it was perfect for what I'm trying to get across. It also can show how weak and how hopeless Alice was. The lyrics say "you let me......." Which is exactly what Alice did. She never fought back. This song also has a bubbly kind of sadistic, happy tone to it which is so twisted. It fits perfectly with Ray because he thinks what he's doing is okay and he has no remorse for what he's done and is doing.

I think it's interesting that you interpreted Ray's intentions as trying to protect and keep Alice safe, even though he's a monster. The song also holds the idea of freedom that Alice probably feels at the end of the book. It's an interesting choice that I think you could interpret in a number of ways.
Your theme song definitely has a strong connection to the book. I think Alice herself could have written most of the lyrics, but there are also a few stanzas that Ray could have written to Alice, almost like a conversation.
Your instrumental choice is perfect in that, as you said, it has a longing or nostalgic feeling, but it also has some really dark undertones, so indicative of what Alice's life is like.
Your final song about Ray is spot on. I think it perfectly shows the deep, dark sickness that has consumed him. It's a disgusting song for a disgusting man.
